Despite the cultural stigma and stringent laws against drug trafficking, substance abuse is on the rise in the UAE. According to data released by The National Rehabilitation Center (NRC) in Abu Dhabi, the most commonly abused substances in the UAE are alcohol (41.3 %) followed by heroin (16.3 %). Abuse of cannabis, tranquilizers and prescription medication (including opioids such as Tramadol) are also a concern in the UAE.

Healthcare currently is free only for UAE citizens. This includes addiction treatment at The National Rehabilitation Center (NRC) in Abu Dhabi, the primary rehabilitation facility that treats UAE nationals from all seven emirates/principalities. The UAE has a zero-tolerance policy in regard to recreational drug use, therefore, treatment at the NRC is available both on a voluntary basis and as an alternative to prosecution.

Private addiction treatment is also available through private rehab facilities. However, private rehabilitation may not be covered by public healthcare and insurance coverage varies. To learn more about your options and whether you qualify for financial aid, call our 24/7 helpline and speak with a specialist today: 800 2252
